Mobile connections

A new connection.
Possibly the same phone.

A mobile gateway may connect a suitable existing lift telephone through a SIM and mobile network. Whether it is the right option depends on the equipment and the installation.

Ask about a gateway upgrade

01

What does the gateway change?

A gateway provides a route between compatible telephone equipment and a mobile network. It does not, by itself, replace the passenger’s alarm button or voice unit, or arrange for someone to answer calls.

Some lift telephones include mobile connectivity within the main unit. Where functions are combined, the assessment still needs to cover the phone, network service, backup power and call receiver separately.

02

“4G” is not the whole voice-call check.

VoLTE means Voice over LTE: voice calling over a 4G mobile network. A 4G data label alone does not establish that the installed equipment can make the required voice calls on the intended service.

The exact device, supported variant, SIM, network service and configuration must work together. SafeLine’s SL6+ 4G VoLTE documentation specifically asks users to check that their subscription provides VoLTE services. AVIRE also identifies voice support for its particular DCP 2.0 gateway model.

Those are manufacturer examples, not a recommendation for every lift or confirmation of Forge stock. The selected product and service must be checked for the individual installation.

03

The site needs more than a coverage-map check.

A coverage map or a signal indicator is a starting point, not proof that an alarm call will work from the installed location. Building construction, equipment position and the proposed antenna arrangement need consideration.

The responsible engineer should assess the site and coordinate end-to-end testing with the receiving service. If the proposed arrangement is unsuitable, another solution or additional work may be needed. Do not relocate or adjust equipment yourself.

04

Agree the SIM and backup responsibilities.

  • Who owns the SIM and holds the account?
  • Does the intended service support the device’s voice functions?
  • Who pays recurring charges and handles renewals or service changes?
  • Which equipment needs backup power, and who maintains it?
  • Who identifies a lost connection and arranges corrective work?

No standard SIM tariff or standalone answering service has been agreed for this site. The quotation should set out any included service and any separately arranged contract. Battery runtime is also installation-specific; do not assume one battery supports the whole communication path.

05

What should a gateway quotation cover?

Ask for the proposed device and variant, any retained telephone equipment, site signal and antenna work, the power arrangement, commissioning and handover records. Confirm access requirements and coordination with your current lift provider and call receiver.

Common questions

A little more clarity.

Can any old lift telephone use a 4G gateway?

No universal compatibility claim can be made. The telephone interface, signalling, intended gateway and receiving arrangements need checking together.

Will the gateway keep working in a power cut?

Only an assessed and maintained backup arrangement can address the relevant power conditions. A gateway’s own battery specification is not a guarantee for every connected component.
